Harris makes excellent early saves to keep Cheddar enroute to win
Saturday 6th October 2018 – Ilminster 2 Cheddar Reserves 4
Cheddar Reserves travelled to, Somerset Premier League, Ilminster Town, needing to pull off a giant killing act to progress in the Somerset Senior Cup.
Ilminster started strongly with the pace and power of their forward line causing the Cheesemen plenty of problems in the opening 15 minutes. Cheddar were grateful to stand-in keeper Scott Harris who made some excellent early saves to keep Cheddar in the match. The visitors were starting to get a foothold in the game but were unlucky to concede deflected free kick that gave Harris no chance. Cheddar responded well, with Hughes going close before Cory Thomas-Barker equalised with a thumping downwards header, giving the Ilminster keeper no chance, just before half time.
Ilminster started the second half well and deservedly went in front again after a fine move and quality finish. The young Cheesemen, who are still unbeaten this season, refused to give up the fight and quickly conjured up an equaliser from George Fairchild with 25 minutes remaining. Cheddar continued to grow in confidence and it was leading scorer, Harry Hughes, who put the visitors in front with a fine goal to edge Cheddar in front. Buoyed with confidence, Cheddar continued to press, driven forwards by Captain Adam Davis and the excellent John Edwards.
With 8 minutes remaining, substitute Dan Smith showed great anticipation and skill to round the Ilminster full back before finishing from an acute angle to put Cheddar 4-2 up and see out the remaining minutes in comfort to progress to the next round.
