Draycott Ladies 2 – 9 Cheddar Ladies

The Local Derby between Draycott Ladies Land Cheddar Ladies took place on 2nd Sept 2018.

Lots of firsts in this game, with Draycott making their first appearance in the Somerset County League and Cheddar with their first league game under new Manager Val Walsh.

The game kicked off with Draycott one player short and Cheddar quickly took advantage by testing Draycott’s newly signed keeper. It wasn’t long before the Cheese girls took the lead with Captain and Assistant Manager Jade Burton skilfully beating the keeper for the first goal of the game.

Kirsten Cooke soon made it two nil as Cheddar settled into the game and she stormed along the right wing to get her second a short time later. The experience of the Cheese girls really started to show through as Captain Jade beat the keep again to get her second of the day.

Unfortunately for Kirsten, she had to settle for two goals as she was taken off with an ankle injury after going over on it in another attack on the Draycott goal. Sarah McGee also had to be taken off with a quad injury and Bella Jonas made her first appearance for the team after spending the summer in the USA coaching kids in the art of soccer!

However, Draycott were not going down with out a fight and spurred on by the late appearance of their Striker Eviee Smith, she managed to get past the Cheddar defence with her speed and wrong footed Keeper Rachel Rousell to score their first of the game which left the half time score of 1-4 to Cheddar.

With strong performances from Char Scriven, Jo Reason and Mel Harris the experience of the Cheddar girls meant that Cheddar had the luxury of being able to make the most of the “rolling subs” to allow everyone match time.

Utilising all 4 subs, Manager Val made some changes for the second half and it wasn’t long before Cheddar went further into the lead with subs Lauren Faulkner, Laura Clarke and Abbie Pring all getting themselves onto the score sheet to bring the score to 7-1

Cheddar keeper Rachel Rousell managed to stop Eviee in her tracks a few times deniying her in some one on one challenges and managed to put her off when Draycott were awared a penalty which Eivee blasted wide. It was Mollie Smith who eventually beat Keeper Rachel to get her first of the game and bring the score to 7-2.

However, the Cheese girls never looked in any danger and their first win of the season was sealed with a third goal from Captain Jade, getting her first hat trick of the season.

There was plenty of support on the side lines for both teams which was great and a lot of the entertainment was provided by injured Manager Val trying to run up and down the side line encouraging her team!
