Cheddar keep cool to win against local rivals Winscombe Reserves
Cheddar Reserves faced local rivals Winscombe Reserves, who were sitting top of Division 3 at the start of this game, so there was plenty at stake in this early league encounter.
Cheddar started where they left off from their midweek game with Cutters Friday and dominated from the start, going 2-0 up within 10 minutes. The first followed fluid passing, which found Tom Manning in space. He took the opportunity to drive at the Winscombe defence, before his perfectly weighted pass found Will Cahill’s run only for his shot to be parried by the keeper from 8 yards but Harry Hughes was on hand to rifle in from 5 yards.
Cheddar continued the pressure, with a succession of corners, with Manning delivering a teasing cross for Josh Underhill to volley home for his second in 2 games.
Winscombe then settled into the game but never really got any meaningful possession, with Cheddar stand in keeper, Scott Harris, rarely troubled with Tom Davies, debutant Matthews and Buxton dealing with any Winscombe threats.
Five minutes before the break, Winscombe crumbled under Cheddar’s dominance, with another great attack down the left from captain Adam Davies. His cross wasn’t cleared and the hard working John Edwards fired in a volley from 10 yards.
Cheddar were now cruising but a lapse of concentration in the final seconds of the half led to a poor clearance and clumsy challenge result in a penalty which was converted.
However any hope for the visitors was snuffed out within 2 minutes of the restart when Cahill latched onto a poor pass, raced through, rounding the keeper with ease and rolling the ball into the net.
Winscombe tried every trick to get back into the game but Cheddar kept their cool and Hughes though he had his second of the game when he slide the ball under the Winscombe keeper only to see Toby Jones tap the ball in on the line for Cheddar’s 5th.
Winscombe got a consolation goal 5 minutes from the end but it was all too late for the Blues who were pleased to see the final whistle blow.
Final score – Cheddar Reserves 5 Winscombe Reserves 2
Man of the Match – Josh Underhill
